Relax and Warm up
Warm up before you start. Start to scribble, dash, mark, draw anything you see or think about. Breathing and calming the mind can help prepare you for interesting outcomes in art. A lot like stretching before running, controlled breathing is essential for attaining focus to achieve an array of mark making
Blind Contour Drawing
You may view blind contour drawing as one continuously connected line that flows in and out of the figure, or subject you are rendering. Try not to look at your page as you draw, continually disregarding the urge to look down.
Move very slowly as you draw the contours, try not to leave anything out. Pretend you are touching the object you are rendering, pushing and pulling the weight and direction of line.
We tend to draw flat through lack of observation, relying on memory to satisfy the outcome. It is best to observe nature as it is, without interruption from preconceived outcome – let the picture surprise you!
Contour Drawing: Describing the edges of a form with one continuous line.
By continually challenging yourself to create in different methods, you open your mind up to interesting cross-references of techniques.
Reverse Block Out
After drawing your subject, make not of the negative space and either block it out in tone, or create an interesting hatch work pattern in line.
Draw freely, all the while pulling back from time to time to contour and/or blind contour within your chosen subject. Switch hands and detach from your work emotionally, it is not about judging the work – it is about creating it in the moment with passion.
